The Director of the Family Health Division of the Department of Health, Dr. Balkrishna Suvedi, says that the maternal mortality ratio has come down from 539 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1998 to 281 in 2006 to 229 in 2009. He says that Nepal will likely reduce the MMR to 134 deaths/100,000 live births by 2015–achieving Millennium Development Goal 5 in Nepal.
