The New York Times and the Huffington Post
Madeleine M. Kunin, former Governor of Vermont, blogs in response to an article published last week in the New York Times, Broaching Birth Control With Afghan Mullahs.
The New York Times article is about seminars organized by Marie Stopes International. The seminars are designed to inform and gain support among religious leaders in Afghanistan on the issue of birth control. In Afghanistan, 6 children per woman is the norm.
Madeleine M. Kunin points out that, “It may seem strange to have to ask for the approval of the mullahs to enable women to survive childbirth”– but goes on to draw an interesting parallel to US society.
